American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a 13-week Med/Surg Orthopedics night shift assignment at a Level III trauma hospital in Council Bluffs, IA, requiring an active IA or Compact RN license and at least 1 year of experience.

Details

• Acute care Med/Surg Orthopedics unit in a Level III trauma hospital setting
• 28 primary beds plus 22 overflow beds
• Patient ratio of 1:5 RN to patients; nurse aides/patient care techs available at a 1:10 ratio
• Common diagnoses and patient types include total knee, hip, and shoulder replacements, COPD, diabetes, wound care, IV infusions, dementia, oncology, hip and ankle fractures, sepsis, pneumonia, cholelithiasis, appendicitis, acute respiratory distress, CHF, and ETOH/drug abuse
• IV drips used on the unit include heparin, IV antibiotics, antithrombotics, and narcotics; RNs are not required to titrate drips
• Charge nurse present on each shift and carries an assignment
• EMR: Epic
• 12-hour night shifts (1830–0700)
• Self-scheduling with every third weekend required; Friday and Saturday nights are considered the weekend for night shift
• Floating required to PCU and McDermott (behavioral health) units

Requirements

• Active IA or Compact (NLC) RN license required; pending licenses are not accepted
• Current BLS certification required; pending certifications are not accepted
• Minimum 1 year of RN experience required
• Epic EMR experience preferred
• Driver's license required for consideration and used to verify candidate resides at least 50 miles from the facility
• 2 professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both must include dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
• Candidates must not have been directly employed full-time, part-time, or PRN by any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI and/or Dignity) within the past year; candidates employed PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered

Additional Information

• Orientation consists of one week of classroom instruction followed by one 12-hour shift of unit-specific orientation
• A pass/fail open-book exam on skills learned is administered during orientation; a minimum score of 90% is required to pass
• Unit culture emphasizes hourly rounding and bedside shift report; travelers are expected to be flexible, self-directed, and open to learning
• Navy blue scrubs required; artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas
• All requested time off must be submitted upfront; additional RTO will not be approved after consideration
• Candidates must reside at least 50 miles from the facility to be eligible for this position
